How to make a living room cosy without redecorating

Short answer: fix the lighting first, then add texture, then arrange the seating so people face each other. Most of what makes a room feel cosy is light, softness and warmth, and you can change all three without painting a wall.

1. Turn off the ceiling light

A single bright overhead light flattens a room. Use two or three lamps at different heights instead. Our warm lighting guide explains which bulbs to choose.

2. Layer textures

Mix soft materials: a wool or chunky knit throw, a velvet or linen cushion, a faux-fur or sheepskin on a chair. Three or four textures in a similar colour range looks calm and deliberate.

3. Add a rug

A rug makes a room feel warmer to the eye and underfoot, and it defines the seating area. Choose one large enough that at least the front legs of your sofa sit on it.

4. Hang curtains higher and fuller

Hang the rail close to the ceiling and let curtains reach the floor. They soften the room, cut draughts and make windows look larger. Lined curtains also keep more heat in.

5. Clear the surfaces

Cosy is not the same as cluttered. Clear tables and shelves, then put back a few things you love: a stack of books, a small plant, a candle. Leave empty space around them.

6. Bring in living things

A few plants make a room feel alive. Choose ones that suit your light, and group them at different heights. Fresh flowers or branches in a vase work for a few days at no great cost.

7. Use candles safely

Candles add warmth, but never leave a lit candle unattended, keep them away from curtains and anything flammable, and put them out before you go to bed or leave the room. Flameless LED candles are a safe alternative.

8. Arrange the seating to talk

Angle the sofa and chairs towards each other instead of all facing the television. A small table within reach of each seat helps everyone settle in.

9. Choose warm colours and natural materials

Warm neutrals, soft greens, rust and cream feel cosier than cool greys. Wood, wool, cotton and linen add warmth that plastic and shiny surfaces do not.

10. Add something for the ears and the nose

Quiet music or a soft playlist changes the mood. A gentle scent from a diffuser, a candle or simmering spices adds to it. Keep both subtle.
