How to choose a hotel neighbourhood in any city, in ten minutes

Short answer: pick the neighbourhood before the hotel. Check five things: how you get around, noise at night, hills and stairs, how the walk home feels after dark, and what is open at 8am. Ten minutes on a map and in recent reviews saves a weekend of regret.

1. Check the real walk to transit

Put the hotel on a map and measure the walk to the nearest metro, tram or train station. Under ten minutes is comfortable. Also check what the station connects to, because one direct line to the places you want is worth more than being close to three lines that do not go there.

2. Read the noise reviews

Open the reviews, sort by newest and search for the words "noise", "loud" and "street". Nightlife areas, main roads and building works are the usual causes. A quiet room at the back of a busy street can be fine, so look for comments about the actual room, and ask for one when you book.

3. Look at the hills and the stairs

Switch the map to its terrain or street view and look for steep streets and flights of steps. A hilly area is rewarding on foot with a small bag and miserable with a big suitcase. Check whether the hotel has a lift, and whether it is the only way up.

4. Think about the walk home

Look at the route from the nearest station to the hotel on street view. Is it a lit, active street or a long empty one? Search recent reviews for comments from solo travellers or late arrivals. It is easy to adjust a trip to a quieter area, and much harder to feel comfortable on a street you dislike.

5. Check what is open at 8am

A good bakery or café within five minutes' walk makes a trip better. Search the map for cafés around your hotel and check their opening hours. It is a small thing that you notice every morning.
