How to plan a city break in one afternoon: a simple checklist
Short answer: decide the dates and budget, pick the neighbourhood, book flexibly, reserve the few things that sell out, and leave the rest open. Each step below takes about fifteen to thirty minutes, so the whole plan fits in an afternoon.
1. Fix the dates and the budget (15 minutes)
Choose the dates first, then decide a total budget for the trip, including transport, hotel, food and the few paid attractions. Working back from one total is easier than adding up costs as you go.
2. Choose the neighbourhood (20 minutes)
Pick where to stay before you pick the hotel. Our hotel neighbourhood checklist covers transit, noise, hills, night-time walking and the first coffee of the day.
3. Book the big costs flexibly (30 minutes)
Book the transport and the hotel together, choosing free cancellation where the price difference is small. Then keep checking, because you can rebook if the price drops.
4. Reserve only what sells out (20 minutes)
Pick two or three things that sell out or need timed entry, such as a major museum, and book those. Leave everything else open. A trip with too many fixed bookings feels like work.
5. Choose three places to eat (15 minutes)
Reserve one special dinner. Save two or three other places on your map, so you always have a good option nearby. Leave the other meals open.
6. Sort out getting around (10 minutes)
Check how to get from the airport or station to your hotel, and what the cheapest sensible local ticket is. Download an offline map of the city, so you are not relying on data.
7. Pack light (20 minutes)
Use our carry-on packing list and check your adapter needs in our travel adapter guide. Check the airline's cabin bag rules, because they differ and change.
8. Leave a buffer
Plan one thing per morning and one per afternoon at most. The best moments on a city break are usually the ones you did not schedule.
